Results develop gradually as swelling settles and the surviving fat becomes incorporated into the surrounding tissues, with the final outcome typically apparent between three and six months. Some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed during healing, but the remaining fat establishes a blood supply and becomes living tissue, providing long-lasting improvement. The proportion that survives depends on individual patient physiology, and a peri-operative plan is used to help optimise retention.
